Happy 2o16! Every year I tear my hair out, going through THOUSANDS of images from a year’s worth of weddings to choose my 50 favorites for a ‘best of’ gallery in January. In 2013 we decided to go wild and design an entire digital magazine to showcase my favorite photos from the year. It turned out so well that we decided to do it AGAIN! Because, who needs to sleep, really. Our second annual book is finally here and I’m deee-lighted to share it with you!

It was a cold and rainy day in November. We had been planning and plotting for WEEKS to do this opulent Indian bridal fashion inspiration photo shoot outdoors – on the lush grounds of Chateau Polonez in Houston. But Mother Nature had other plans, and thanks to the dismal weather we were forced indoors.

Luckily I believe everything happens for a reason…

… and especially this! As it turns out, exploring the European-inspired architecture inside Chateau Polonez was a true blessing. The interior rooms were the perfect location to capture our theme of Victorian Romance.

I love being able to bounce back and forth between real weddings and editorial fashion photo shoots like this one. If you’re familiar with my work, you probably know that I love editorial style wedding photography. What does that mean? Basically, its the style of photography you see in fashion magazines. Whether I’m working with brides or models, I’m aiming for a certain look: high fashion bridal portraits.

Interestingly, my fashion experience has really helped me become a better wedding photographer.

Working with models helps me so much with posing and lighting my real brides. And I had such a blast working with the lovely Kairavi and Alison on this shoot. Top wardrobe stylist Sobi Qazi outfitted the girls in the most stunning bridal saris and lenghas. And the jewelry? Jaw-droppingly beautiful! I’m in love with that headpiece. And the black lace mask? Gorgeous!

This was one of my favorite photo shoots all year, so we decided to design several spreads showcasing Victorian Romance in our “Best of 2013” digital magazine! Here’s a peek at the magazine:

I enjoyed getting to work with some of the best Indian wedding vendors in Houston on this photo shoot! Special thanks to the talented and energetic Sobi Qazi for coordinating this photo shoot. I came to Sobi with a kernel of an idea, and she basically waved a magic wand and everything came together perfectly.

Alright I know it wasn’t quite THAT easy! But she made it look effortless.

Don’t look now, but there are only six weeks left in 2013. And I can NOT let this year get away from me before sharing this minimalist-themed styled photo shoot from all the way back in January. I was compelled by my love of editorial wedding photography to create a bridal fashion-oriented photo shoot. Just for fun. And no offense to mason jars and vintage lace. But there’s already so much rustic wedding inspiration out in the world. Rebel that I am, I wanted to do something… entirely different. Something uber-modern and and elegant and absolutely gorgeous.

It all started at the Kimber Modern (the amazing boutique hotel) in downtown Austin, where I was blown away by the award-winning minimalist architecture and design. That’s where this theme was born – the minimalist, modern wedding.

Those of you who know my work might be saying, wait just a second there, Uma. WHERE are bright colors? We know you just loove color. What’s going on here? Well, you know something… I’m kind of in love with this minimalist look, even though it’s not bursting with color. Location is my muse, and the Kimber Modern just really inspires the zen master in me. And so did the modern wedding gowns our wardrobe stylist, the talented Cristina Facundo, found for this photo shoot. I mean seriously – even if you’re not usually into fashion, these graceful and romantic wedding dresses are jaw-dropping.

I was so excited to work with a team of such talented creatives. Wardrobe stylist Cristina Facundo created three stunning modern looks for our “bride”, Emma Hefti, and two debonair looks for our “groom”, Bradley Kee. Check out the credits below for all the wardrobe info.

Event designer Maureen Stevens and florist Carrie Beamer created a beautifully modern tablescape and florals. The sculptural bouquet that Carrie made is a work of art.

Laura Heyns (hair) and Laura Martinez (makeup) did a gorgeous job getting our beautiful models ready.

The amazing thing about my Austin Fashion Week mash-up team is that we didn’t even KNOW each other before we entered this competition. Our names were picked out of a hat. And yet, our little group of complete strangers was able to come together in the name of creativity and produce something beautiful.

In case you missed my last post,  Austin Fashion Week is coming — May 3-11. And as a part of this week, “Mash Up” teams come together in the spirit of  kicking some ass friendly competition. A smart guy named Matt Swinney started AFW five years ago to showcase the work of local Austin talent. Not just fashion designers – but also models, photographers, hair stylists and makeup artists.

For the Mash Up contest, each team creates a concept of their choosing, and executes that concept during a photo shoot. A single image is chosen to enter the competition.

Thanks to Carrie, the beautiful Red Stella Salon (where she works) was our staging grounds before going out on location. Here’s Carrie doing hair.

What an incredible color palette. I love the green “highlights” in Shelby’s hair. And purple lips? Amazing.

That’s a wrap! Thank you Katey, Catherine, Jane-Michael, Carrie and Shelby. We’ll be at the Austin Fashion Awards on Saturday, May 11, 2013. And our gorgeous model Shelby will bring this look to life in the Mash Up Team Runway Show. I hope to see you there.

To all of my loyal blog readers (a.k.a. mom), I have a favor to ask you. Please vote for me. It’s a long-ish story, but the short version is this: I took some pictures, now one of them is in a contest, and the picture with the most votes wins A MILLION DOLLARS.

Hahaha. No. I wish.

But the picture with the most votes DOES win bragging rights, and an award at the Austin Fashion Awards on May 11. So that’s kind of cool right?

For those of you who are used to seeing wedding photography in this space, you may be saying – WHERE ARE THE BRIDES AND GROOMS UMA? OK so here’s the thing. I LOVE fashion editorial photography. I use it as inspiration for my wedding portraiture. I always approach my bride and groom portrait sessions as if I’m putting together an editorial shoot for a magazine. And I love shooting fashion, too. So, when I heard about this competition for photographers, I signed up.

Austin Fashion Week is coming — May 3-11.

My team is the best. Here are the talented women I had the pleasure of working with: designer Catherine Carter Hite, jewelry designer Jane-Michael Stallings, model Shelby Smith, makeup artist Katey Stevenson and hair stylist Carrie Leigh.

In a blog post next week I’m going to tell you all about the amazing team that I worked with to produce these images. But for now, I’d just like to share with you some of my favorite images from this photo shoot. In the hopes that I can convince you to vote for my team from every computer and device you own inspire you!

Catherine’s mermaid-y dress was our starting point. Our mermaid, Shelby, quickly evolved into a siren (sirens are sexier, according to Homer) and I of course started thinking of water-y locations.

I love, love, love shooting around water. But I don’t usually get to take my brides INTO the water. However on this shoot, that’s exactly where I was allowed to go! Catherine was fine with her gorgeous gown getting completely wet, so off we went into Spicewood Springs. Woohoo!

Without further ado, I present “SPRING WAKES THE SIREN”.

I’ll be back in a few days with another post that takes you behind the scenes of this fun shoot.

So here’s the shameless plug: please vote for Spring Wakes the Siren. I would be so grateful!

Voting closes at noon on Wednesday, May 1. Winners will be announced at the Austin Fashion Awards on May 11 at Austin Music Hall, where you can also see these images come to life on the runway!

The amazing thing about this dress is that even though Shelby hiked through water and over rocks while wearing it, IT STILL LOOKS RUNWAY WORTHY. Don’t believe me? Come check it out at the Mash Up runway show on May 11.
