I took around 70,000 images last year. It’s a lot of pictures to go through, but I actually love this annual ritual of looking back. Especially when the editing process is over (WHEW) and I can just sit back and look at my year from this perspective. We had so much fun!! On the beach in Cancun, throwing holi powder, dancing up a storm – it was all a celebration of love. It’s no contest, my couples are the best. They are wonderful human beings and I love them. Without further ado, here are some of my favorite images from last year.

Happy 2o16! Every year I tear my hair out, going through THOUSANDS of images from a year’s worth of weddings to choose my 50 favorites for a ‘best of’ gallery in January. In 2013 we decided to go wild and design an entire digital magazine to showcase my favorite photos from the year. It turned out so well that we decided to do it AGAIN! Because, who needs to sleep, really. Our second annual book is finally here and I’m deee-lighted to share it with you!

These are my three favorite things about this stylish wedding brought to you by the fabulous team at CLINK: First, the most STUNNING modern mandap you’ve ever seen. Second, the most ADORABLE puppy (Mowgli) and three, this joyful couple ❤

These are my three favorite things about this stylish wedding brought to you by the fabulous team at CLINK: First, the most STUNNING modern mandap you’ve ever seen. Second, the most adorable puppy (Mowgli) and three, this joyful couple ❤

This has been the year of adorable dogs for us here at Studio Uma. Nearly every engagement session we’ve done has included at LEAST one canine companion. Plus a handful of our 2015 weddings as well. Not that we’re complaining… we’re suckers for these cuties!

This couple flew their little pup out to Austin from Seattle to celebrate with them, and he completely stole the show. Amila even had a henna tattoo of Mowgli drawn on her arm.

Enjoy!

Dogs should be at all weddings don’t you think? Especially these two. Abby and Simon were all dressed up as bride and groom and pretty much STOLE THE SHOW.

It was a perfect spring day in April for Dahlia and Ryan’s Four Seasons wedding. In fact, they got married twice in one day! The Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Austin is one of the most beautiful locations I know for a wedding. I love fusion weddings, and this was no exception. The day blended the Bengali Hindu rituals of Dahlia’s family with those of a traditional American wedding. Hands down, this was one of the best Four Seasons weddings I have been to. There was so much awesome at this wedding, between the TWO ceremonies, the gorgeous saris, the confetti explosion on the dance floor (you’ll see) and of course Abby and Simon.

Enjoy!

Emily and David’s wedding at the W Hotel in Austin was one of my most memorable weddings of 2014. These guests get my award for BEST DANCING at a wedding, hands down. No contest. And then there’s the moment when Emily and David took over for the DJ (you have to see it to believe it). It was Taylor Swift and Shake it Off, and these newlyweds brought the house down.

And then there’s the moment when Emily and David took over for the DJ (you have to see it to believe it). It was Taylor Swift and Shake it Off, and these newlyweds brought the house down at their W Hotel wedding.

Everything about this day was impeccable: the lush bouquets, the pretty blush bridesmaids dresses – and especially the bride and groom. They live in New York and returned to Austin for their engagement photos last winter. I knew from that day on that I adore this dynamic couple. Here is their unforgettable W Hotel wedding day, filled with love and laughter.

What do you get when you mix salsa dancing, Michael Jackson, Dia de los Muertos and a magnificent grooms cake shaped like the Taj Mahal? So glad you asked. When Michelle and Gandhi planned their Star Hill Ranch wedding in Austin last year, they included all of the above and more. Michelle is practically a celebrity in Austin – she’s the owner of Michelle’s Patisserie. Michelle and her team spend their days concocting the most amazing wedding cakes and other sweet treats. They outdid themselves for this special wedding.

Star Hill Ranch is one of my favorite Austin wedding venues. It’s like an Old West town and you can tell they shoot movies there. CLINK did an impeccable job coordinating this wedding.

And the dancing. Wow, the dancing! The bride and groom choregraphed a sizzling number that incorporated their love of salsa as well as Bollywood. Even the father/daughter dance was meticulously choreographed. The guests at this Star Hill Ranch wedding were delighted.

Dear friends, Happy new year! Bonne année! Ein glückliches neues Jahr! Hauoli Makahiki hou! Szczesliwego Nowego Roku! Feliz año nuevo! Chuc mung nam moi! I am thrilled to share my favorite 50 photos from the year with you.

2014 brought weddings and engagements in Mexico, Virginia, California, North Carolina, Chicago – and of course all over the great state of Texas. THANK YOU to my warm, funny, loving clients. I am always thanking my lucky stars that I get work with such big-hearted brides and grooms.

Lots of love to my talented team of editors, second shooters and assistants, who were and are such a wonderful support. Special thanks to Izzy Ramirez, Ashley Landis, Brie Mullin, Greg Lovett and Julia Robinson.

In June I was thrilled to be ranked fifth on the Top 20 Wedding Photographer’s in Texas by Bridebox — woohoo! Last year also brought in 7 new Fearless Photographer Awards.

Speaking of Fearless, another highlight of the year was attending my first Fearless Photographers conference in Arizona in November. I love being a part of this group/family.

How did it get to be January so quickly? Once again we find ourselves at the beginning. Without further ado, I’d like to present my favorite photos from 2014.

Wishing you love and light in 2015,

Uma

What. A. Year.

I wish I could tell you 2014 was all love and light for me. But it was not. It was intense and painful at times, and that’s why when I look at these pictures I am filled with deep gratitude that I had these jewels of moments to fill me up.

Here’s what I learned… A certain darkness is needed to see stars.Osho.

I’m absolutely surrounded by stars.

There’s something AWESOME I want to share with you. I collaborated with a talented graphic designer at Mae Mae Paperie to design this stunning book. There’s nothing I love better than design and books, so I am jumping for JOY!

We wrapped our first wedding of this year on January 3rd. What a beautiful thing a new year is! These 2015 brides and grooms – wow. Prepare to be dazzled by this group.

To whet your appetite, here is a link to my first Gallery Book. The second one is going to be even better.

This love story starts at Little Woodrows, where two Rice University MBA students met for the first time. As fate would have it, they had been assigned to the same “core team”. Was it love at first sight? “My first impression of Brian was that he was uptight and too serious,” recalls Mary. “The first story he told me was that he had canceled a trip to see the World Cup in South Africa to prepare for school! What an awful decision!” Luckily for Brian that first impression didn’t last long. And one semester later, they were dating.

When I think about downtown Houston wedding photography, the Petroleum Club of Houston is the first venue that comes to mind. Poised on the 43rd floor of the ExxonMobil building, it is simply a photographer’s dream. The sweeping panoramic views of Houston at night are breathtaking.

There are so many things I loved about this wedding. The dashing groom, the elegant bride — I can’t say enough about these two wonderful human beings. And that whole “Bridesmaids” move poster we re-created (at the chapel)? Not my idea. That came from one of Mary’s bridesmaids. Such an awesomely fun group of girls! I loved their creativity. Working with them was pure joy.

Needless to say, this was one of my favorite weddings of 2013. Enjoy!

Every year I tear my hair out, going through THOUSANDS of images from a years worth of weddings to choose my 50 favorites for a ‘best of’ gallery in January. It is quite simply a monster undertaking for this indecisive photographer. This year, instead of a blog post I decided to go wild and design an entire digital magazine to showcase my favorite photos from 2013. Because HEY who needs sleep? Seriously. What is this “sleep” you speak of?

Every year I tear my hair out, going through THOUSANDS of images from a year’s worth of weddings to choose my 50 favorites for a ‘best of’ gallery in January. It is quite simply a monster undertaking for this indecisive photographer. This year, instead of a blog post I decided to go wild and design an entire digital magazine to showcase my favorite photos from 2013. Because HEY who needs sleep? Seriously. What is this “sleep” you speak of?

Six months ago, this magazine was a mere wisp of an idea.

One month ago, it was, well, still just a wispy little wisp. In the past 4 weeks, I’ve made a lot of decisions and thought to myself more than once: ok, this is either going to be amazing or completely suck. Luckily, I had some talented folks on my team. And I’m proud to say that today the first annual Studio Uma Gallery Book is live!!! And happily, I don’t think it sucks.

I’m so excited to share it with you. Check it out <  http://ow.ly/tn3BT > and let me know what you think ♥

2013 was a wonderful year filled with amazing clients. And I am truly looking forward to the slate of weddings coming up this year. Many more new friends to be made, thousands of pictures to be taken and love to document.

As you might have guessed, many smart, talented and patient people helped me make this magazine.

They looked at pictures (some of them looked at THOUSANDS of photos), they copy edited, they photoshopped, they helped me make wardrobe decisions, they took pictures of moi that I actually like (that might be the biggest accomplishment of all), they designed and re-designed and re-designed some more. And they cheerleaded me along the way.

Here “they” are:

Graphic Design: Matt Thompson with Sturdy MFG Co

Photo Editors: Greg Lovett, Mark Edelson, Gary Kirksey, Priya Sanghvi, Chris Hendrix

Photos of me: Amber Vickery

Thank you also to Brie Mullin and to my mom for finding the most beautiful assortment of wood blocks in India and carrying them home for me.

By the way, here is a beautiful short video on Indian hand block printing. It evokes so much about India that I love. Watch it.

Don’t look now, but there are only six weeks left in 2013. And I can NOT let this year get away from me before sharing this minimalist-themed styled photo shoot from all the way back in January. I was compelled by my love of editorial wedding photography to create a bridal fashion-oriented photo shoot. Just for fun. And no offense to mason jars and vintage lace. But there’s already so much rustic wedding inspiration out in the world. Rebel that I am, I wanted to do something… entirely different. Something uber-modern and and elegant and absolutely gorgeous.

It all started at the Kimber Modern (the amazing boutique hotel) in downtown Austin, where I was blown away by the award-winning minimalist architecture and design. That’s where this theme was born – the minimalist, modern wedding.

Those of you who know my work might be saying, wait just a second there, Uma. WHERE are bright colors? We know you just loove color. What’s going on here? Well, you know something… I’m kind of in love with this minimalist look, even though it’s not bursting with color. Location is my muse, and the Kimber Modern just really inspires the zen master in me. And so did the modern wedding gowns our wardrobe stylist, the talented Cristina Facundo, found for this photo shoot. I mean seriously – even if you’re not usually into fashion, these graceful and romantic wedding dresses are jaw-dropping.

I was so excited to work with a team of such talented creatives. Wardrobe stylist Cristina Facundo created three stunning modern looks for our “bride”, Emma Hefti, and two debonair looks for our “groom”, Bradley Kee. Check out the credits below for all the wardrobe info.

Event designer Maureen Stevens and florist Carrie Beamer created a beautifully modern tablescape and florals. The sculptural bouquet that Carrie made is a work of art.

Laura Heyns (hair) and Laura Martinez (makeup) did a gorgeous job getting our beautiful models ready.
