Self-portrait with friends — celebrating Holi in Mauritius!
.. who am I? I am Uma. I take pictures. I’ve been a photojournalist for the past decade. I got a masters in photojournalism, traveled the world on assignment for magazines and newspapers, won some awards and had a lot of fun. I went to Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea, Mauritius, Haiti and even South Florida. Now THAT was an adventure. If you want to check out my editorial work, here is my photojournalism portfolio: umasanghvi.com.
I spent a year in Mauritius photographing rites of passage, including lots of wedding rituals. The adventure of being a news photographer has been stimulating, but I loved the joy of weddings. And the beauty. The moments, emotion, light, color and celebration of it all. What an inspiring place to go to work, don’t you think?
I don’t know exactly how to describe my pictures. Some of my wedding photography is completely photojournalistic – all about capturing the fleeting moments of the day. But my portraits are different, I think they’re more like paintings. This makes sense to me, since painting was my first love.
If you’re a bride or groom, I’d love to talk to you about your wedding photography. Every couple has their own unique story, and it’s my job to tell that story in pictures (and sometimes sound). Give me a call. I can’t wait to hear from you!
